Pre-PMA Camera Rumors
By Matt J. Weiss, January 27, 2010 @ 04:07 PM (EST)
PMA begins on February 21st and despite the ridiculous amount of new camera releases we have seen already this year, I would expect more.  In any case, certainly the rumors are already starting. I will keep posting any rumors that hit the wires and look interesting on this page, so if you're into the rumors bookmark this page and check back.

Remember, rumors are just that and nothing more. Don't plan any purchasing decisions based on these rumors. You never know what the real story is until they are released.

Nikon D700x?

The rumors about a D700 upgrade are plentiful, and none of them seem all that valid, but I certainly think we will see an upgrade soon. What sensor it has, in other words, will it be the D700x, D700s or Dx00 with an entirely new sensor, is not yet clear.

Apparently, CNBC seems to think it's the D700x. Someone called in on the Suze Orman Show the other day asking her whether she should buy the D700x for $4300. First I got over the shock that a show exists where you can call in and ask someone whether you should buy something or not, then I realized that this was very strange. Did the person calling have an inside tip? Is this just a prank? A typo? Who knows.  Check it out on the latest Suze Orman podcast on iTunes at around the 29 minute mark.

Update: It is unlikely we will new a Nikon SLR at PMA.

D700x rumor

Nikon Back-Illuminated Sensor?

Although no D700 rumor has much promise, Nikon is set to release four new point and shoot cameras. Nikon point and shoots don't have a huge place in underwater photography, but the interesting part of the rumors is that one of the new models will be the P100 which would have a back-illuminated sensor. the back-illuminate sensor would be a first in Nikon cameras and gives the point and shoot cameras better performance in low light.

Canon 60D, 550D/600D?

Engadget recently put up a rumor that's a bit of a stretch, which they don't do all that often for camera models.  The rumor is about the Canon 60D and a Canon Rebel 550D/600D.  The rumor they cited said both cameras would have a 15.1mp sensor and have articulating screens.  The rumors say both models are able to shoot 720p video at 30fps, but only the 60D  is capable of 1080p. This seems strange since current Rebel models are already capable of 1080p.

Update (02/04): It appears that th new Canon Rebel will be called the T2i. It apparently will have a new build and frame for Rebels, a higher res LCD and selecatable frame rates for movies.

Sony DSC-TX5 waterproof camera with 1080p movie recording?

Sony logo
This one from Engadget seems a little more promising. Sony is expected to release the DSC-Tx5 waterproof camera at PMA.  Specs apparently include a 10fps burst mode, an image stacking mode for reducing noise in high ISO images, and the real kicker, 1080p MPEG-4 movie recording.  I imagine that it will take SD cards and not just the Memory Stick. No word on max depth yet, though…hopefully 10m instead of 3m.

Olympus E-?

Olympus Logo
Olympus certainly has something up their sleeve, releasing a promo today with a hand covering up an PEN like camera. From the image there is clearly a flash hot shoe, but not much else is visible. It looks like possibly interchangeable lenses.  Is it the E-P3? A different Micro Four-Thirds camera? What we do know is there will be a major announcement from Olympus at PMA.

Two things I want from Olympus: Micro Four-Thirds housing and waterproof camera rated deeper than 10m -- both are huge long shots.

Update: Olympus made me look pretty silly. They came out with a Micro-Four Thirds camera AND housing!
