The Schmidt Ocean Institute, an ocean research group, discovered what is believed to be the S.S. Terra Nova, a ship known for its expedition to the Antarctic. Discovered just off of Greenland, the sunken ship was located when testing echo sounders on another ship.
The S.S. Terra Nova made its trip to the South Pole in 1910-1912 and was led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott of the British Navy. Following that, the ship was used as a supply vessel until its demise in 1943 when it went down off the coast of southern Greenland.
See in pictures what remains of the Terra Nova, including its railings encrusted in sea creatures, an acoustic image taken with the echo sounder, and an old photo of the ship on its polar expedition.
