National Geographic is featuring a series of beautiful underwater photographs that feature newly discovered and previously known reef fish from Indonesia. The photographs come from a recently published book, Reef Fishes of the East Indies, by Allen R. Gerald and Mark V. Erdmann.
In the photos you can see new species of the fairy basslet and fairy goby as well as something they’ve nicknamed the “tripod fish,” named for its two long skinny fins that offset its similarly shaped body.
Additionally, there are several photographs of already known species, including the bizarre scorpionfish and giant frogfish.
Check out the colorful photographs here.
