Petition: Stop Floating Gillnets in California
Oceana, the large conservation organization that focuses on marine protection, has started a petition to disallow the use of floating gill-nets off the coast of California.
According to Oceana, on their petition page, these floating gill-nets are designed to catch swordfish and thresher sharks. In actuality for every five swordfish caught there are at least one marine mammal and six other fish caught and killed accidentally.
These fish and mammals, which include Mola Molas, Sperm Whales, sharks, and turtles are thrown back into the sea as by-catch. Head over to Oceana to sign the petition and stop the use of floating gill-nets off California.
