Panasonic has promised a firmware update for the recently released Lumix G9II—version 2.0—that will allow the camera to output 12-bit RAW video over HDMI to either an Atomos external recorder in ProRes RAW or a Blackmagic Design external recorder in BRAW.
The G9II will be able to send 5.7K, C4K, 5.8K (4:3), and 4.4K (4:3) 12-bit RAW when connected to an Atomos Ninja V, Ninja V+, Ninja, Ninja Ultra, Shogun, Shogun Ultra, and Shogun Connect. Panasonic points out that software supporting Apple ProRes RAW will be required to edit recorded RAW video. Similarly, the G9II will be able to send the same resolutions to the Blackmagic Video Assist 5-inch 12G HDR or the Blackmagic Video Assist 7-inch 12G HDR external recorders. Editing Blackmagic RAW data will require DaVinci Resolve Studio, while playing back the footage will be possible using DaVinci Resolve or DaVinci Resolve Studio.
In its press release below, Panasonic notes that a LUT (lookup table) exclusively designed for RAW video is available on its customer support website to allow the RAW footage to be color-graded as V-Log and V-Gamut.
Panasonic has not provided a date for when firmware version 2.0 will be available to download.
