Is the glorious reign of the Olympus TG series coming to an end? The rugged cameras may be nearly indestructible, but it has been reported that the latest iteration of the diminutive point-and-shoot—the TG-6—is no longer for sale from OM System in Japan. According to Asobinet (Japanese), the OM System Japan store says “online store sales completed” for the TG-6, although the model has not moved to OM System’s list of discontinued products.
If you’re in the U.S., the popular model is still listed as available in the OM System online store as well as at retailers such as Backscatter, and the TG-6 won’t be disappearing from shelves anytime soon. However, if production has indeed ceased, then there’s ultimately a limit to the number of available units out there.
Given that the TG-6 was announced back in 2019, it’s very possible that this isn’t the death knell for the TG series, but rather preparation for the imminent arrival of the TG-7. A great many underwater shooters—not to mention manufacturers of TG-series housings and accessories—would certainly hope so. The TG-6, in particular, is capable of excellent results, despite its compact size and modest 12MP sensor resolution, in no small part due to its Microscope Mode, which facilitates incredibly impressive close-ups of macro critters. The TG series is dead! Long live the TG series!
