Oil Spill Cleanup Underway Near Athens, Greece
An oil spill cleanup is underway around the Greek island of Salamis after a 45-year-old vessel sank off its shores on Sunday. Authorities are not clear what caused the Agia Zoni II to sink, but the Captain and Chief Engineer were charged with negligence and released on bail.
The ship was carrying 2,500 tonnes of crude oil when it sank and the government is calling it an “environmental disaster.” Businesses around the island have closed and fishermen have been encouraged to fish elsewhere.
