OG Picture of the Year 2024 and Music & Pictures Winner: “Connected” by Norm Vexler
The winners of the 12th Ocean Geographic Pictures of the Year (OGPICOTY) have been unveiled. This year’s competition saw 82 winners receiving 101 awards across 17 categories, showcasing a remarkable array of talent and first-time winners. The narratives and quality of the submissions eloquently illustrate both the splendour of our oceans and the threats they face.
The OGPICOTY’s overarching theme of our connection to the ocean is celebrated by this year’s Picture of the Year by Norm Vexler, “Connected.” The entry won the unique “Music & Pictures” category, which called for submission of a movie file made from a slideshow of pictures montaged to music.
Since its inception in 2013, the OG Pictures of the Year competition has advocated for greater awareness of the beauty and challenges facing our ocean environment. Entries are judged by esteemed luminaries of ocean arts and sciences—with the competition categories named in their honor—including Dr. Sylvia Earle, Dr. Carden Wallace, David Doubilet, Dr. Gerry Allen, Dr. William Hamner, Doug Perrine, Emory Kristof, Brian Skerry, Michael Aw, Valerie Taylor and Dr. Alex Mustard.
