The Washington based company OceanGate has given researchers at the University of Washington $5 million to design a new commercial submersible that can travel up to two miles deep underwater. The team of scientists recently revealed their design and the “Cyclops” is a bullet-shaped vehicle made from carbon-fiber with a thick glass viewing dome at one end.
OceanGate believes that the new submersible will expand opportunities for ocean exploration. "Most people don't appreciate there are not very many private or commercial subs," said Stockton Rush, the company’s CEO.
They hope to make the sub available to the oil and gas industry, deep-sea mining companies, pharmaceutical ventures, academic researchers, and possibly even tourists.
Cyclops will debut in 2016.
