Scientists from DePaul University discovered a unique new species of armored catfish in an Ecuadorian river.
Most interestingly, scientists believe that the new species, named Cordylancistrus santarosensis, may be a “missing link” between two other kinds of armored catfish.
The Cordylancistrus santarosensis lacks armored head plates on the sides of its head, while other species of Cordylancistrus have head plates. A related genus, the Chaetostoma, lacks armor on its snout. Scientists now believe this could be the link between the two different types of catfish.
