Nauticam Unveils Housing for the Sony a9 III
By Ian Bongso-Seldrup, February 8, 2024 @ 10:30 PM (EST)

After Sony dropped the a9 Mark III armed with the world’s first full-frame global shutter and a slew of jaw-dropping specs—blackout-free continuous shooting at 120fps with AF, no-crop 4K/120p video, and the ability to sync with flash at up to 1/80,000s—you may have been wondering when you’d be able to take it for a spin underwater. Well, wonder no longer: Nauticam has announced the imminent arrival of its housing for the a9 Mark III—you can pre-order now and shipping is promised from March 8th.

The NA-A9III promises all the good stuff we’ve come to expect from the Hong Kong-headquartered company. Ergonomic control placement is front and center: There’s a dual thumb lever alongside the right hangle and a single thumb lever on the left, as well as another left-hand lever operating a customizable button. In addition to fiber-optic ports for your strobes, there’s an M14 accessory port that could be used for an electrical bulkhead if preferred. There’s also a large-bore M24 accessory port for hooking up a monitor/recorder such as the Atomos Ninja V via HDMI 2.0.

Nauticam’s housing for the Sony a9 III costs $4,657 and is available for pre-order from Backscatter now.

Inspired by the water contact lens designs of decades before, Nauticam is continually developing new optical accessories that raise the bar of what is possible in underwater imaging. Designed with modern lens design software and fully optimized for in-water use, these lenses provide significantly better performance than an in-air lens behind a dome or flat port alone. The NA-A9II can leverage the unparalleled optical quality of Nauticam's Water Contact optics such as the FCP-1, WACP-1 or WWL-1B which offers up to 170º field-of-view, full zoom through, an almost 0" minimum focus distance with supported lenses.  For macro, the SMC-1 and SMC-2 deliver tack-sharp super-macro magnification levels up to 4x with the Sony 90mm macro lens.

The standard optical glass viewfinder is very good and travel-friendly, but many photographers prefer the ease of a magnified viewfinder with an adjustable diopter. Nauticam produces a "straight" 180º enlarging viewfinder and a 45º angled enlarging viewfinder to enhance the ease of close-quarters work often associated with macro shooting. Both viewfinders have high-quality optics and allow bright viewing of the entire image. A patented external dioptric adjustment allows personal adjustment to a sharp-as-a-tack standard underwater and viewfinder changes can be executed in less than 30 seconds without using tools. Exceptional composition and focus accuracy have never been more accessible.

Nauticam build quality is simply unmatched, using cutting-edge product design and modern, innovative manufacturing techniques that result in trouble-free reliability. A bit like a fine Swiss timepiece, the complexity under the hood results in a trouble-free user experience that just works, and keeps working for years to come.

The Nauticam vacuum check and leak detection system is shipped with NA-A9III as standard equipment. Combined with an accessory vacuum valve (PN 25624), this monitoring system provides constant updates on the water-tight and safe-to-dive status of the housing. A simple color-coded LED lighting system lets the user know that the vacuum is solid, or that the housing is losing vacuum. Leak detection is built into the same circuit, so if there is water intrusion, an audible and visual indication will occur.

The Nauticam system is temperature compensated, eliminating false alarms caused by a change in outside temperature, or from a camera heating up on an action-packed dive.
