Nauticam Announces Housing for the Canon EOS R1
By Ian Bongso-Seldrup, December 5, 2024 @ 05:30 PM (EST)

Nauticam has unveiled its underwater housing for the new Canon EOS R1. The flagship full-frame camera aimed at professionals pairs a back-illuminated stacked 24.2-megapixel sensor with the latest DIGIC X processor as well as a new image processor called the DIGIC Accelerator. The result is burst shooting up to 40fps (electronic shutter) with almost no rolling shutter, Canon’s most assured autofocus performance and subject tracking; and 6K/60p RAW, pixel-binned 4K/120p, and oversampled 4K/60p video capture—all with no sensor crop.

As you’d expect, Nauticam’s NA-R1 aims to make the most of these impressive specs, packaged in a housing with the attention to ergonomic detail that distinguishes the Hong Kong brand. You get full access to “all essential controls and customizable buttons” via levers and dials arranged around the integrated handles; full compatibility with the company’s water-contact optics, such as the Fisheye Conversion Port (FCP-1) and Extended Macro Wide Lens (EMWL); and the ability to connect external monitors or recorders through the housing’s M16 (HDMI 1.4) and M24 (HDMI 2.0) ports.

The housing supports external flash triggering via built-in fiber optic bulkheads, with both manual and TTL flash triggers available, and additional bulkheads allow you to use electrically triggered strobes if preferred. Nauticam’s integrated vacuum check and leak detection system comes as standard.

The NA-R1 is priced at $6,941 and can be pre-ordered now from retailers such as Backscatter.

PRESS RELEASE

INTRODUCING NA-R1

The Canon EOS R1

The Canon EOS R1 is powered by a 24.2MP full-frame backside-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor with Canon's advanced Dual Pixel autofocus system. Its groundbreaking Cross-Type line-detection AF technology promises unparalleled autofocus speed and precision across Canon’s mirrorless lineup.

The R1’s electronic viewfinder (EVF) raises the bar, offering an exceptional 9.44 million-dot resolution on a 0.9x magnification OLED display, making it Canon's most impressive EVF to date. The optional electronic shutter minimizes rolling shutter effects and supports blackout-free shooting, while the first-curtain electronic shutter achieves an X-sync speed of 1/320, dropping to 1/200 with the fully mechanical shutter.

For video enthusiasts, the R1 delivers internally recorded RAW footage at up to 6K/60fps and supports 4K/120fps in compressed 4:2:2 10-bit formats. A pre-record mode of 3 or 5 seconds ensures you capture decisive moments in fast-paced action. Enhanced by a refined DIGIC Accelerator processor and improved image stabilization, the EOS R1 excels in producing exceptional video and stills, even in challenging low-light conditions.

THE NAUTICAM NA-R1 UNDERWATER HOUSING

When it comes to professional underwater imaging, Nauticam housings set the industry standard. Renowned for their intuitive design, unmatched reliability, and a wide range of precision-engineered optics, Nauticam remains the top choice for elite image-makers worldwide. The newest addition to the Canon RF lineup, the NA-R1, brings seamless underwater control to the Canon EOS R1, offering thoughtfully positioned controls, ergonomic handles, and precision dials and levers. The NA-R1 provides full access to all essential controls and customizable buttons, allowing professionals to tailor the housing to their exact needs.

Nauticam Optics

To harness the full potential of the R1's 24.2MP CMOS sensor, pairing it with Nauticam's cutting-edge underwater optics is essential. Whether using high-quality glass and acrylic dome ports, the revolutionary WACP series, or the new FCP system, Nauticam optics ensure unparalleled image quality, no matter the subject or conditions.

Enhanced Viewfinders

The Canon R1’s 9.44M-dot EVF is elevated further with Nauticam’s Enhanced Viewfinders, which provide crystal-clear edge-to-edge viewing in both angled and straight designs, ensuring comfort and accuracy underwater.

Flash Triggering

For lighting, the NA-R1 supports external flash triggering via built-in fiber optic bulkheads, with optional manual or TTL flash triggers. Hardwired cable connections are also available using additional bulkheads for maximum flexibility when using strobes that don’t support fiber-optic triggering.

HDMI Output

The R1’s clean 6K HDMI output can be transmitted to external monitors or recorders through Nauticam’s HDMI 1.4 and 2.0 bulkheads and supported monitor housings, making it a complete solution for underwater professionals.

Vacuum Check and Leak Detection System

The Nauticam vacuum check and leak detection system comes standard with the NA-R1, ensuring unparalleled peace of mind for underwater photographers. When paired with an optional vacuum valve, this advanced monitoring system continuously updates the housing's watertight integrity and dive-ready status. A simple, color-coded LED display allows users to instantly verify if the vacuum is secure or detect if the housing is losing pressure.

Integrated leak detection further enhances safety, providing both audible and visual alerts in the event of water intrusion. The system’s temperature compensation feature prevents false alarms caused by environmental temperature shifts or heat generated by the camera during intense shooting sessions. With this robust technology, divers can focus on capturing stunning images, confident that their equipment is protected.
