Nauticam has announced a Cooling Fan System for its newly released NA-R5II housing for the Canon EOS R5 Mark II. According to Nauticam, the in-housing technology “maximizes your camera’s internal recording capabilities” and allows videographers to work “without overheating concerns.” The Cooling Fan System is powered by two rechargeable AA batteries and can be activated via a dedicated button on the back of the housing, while LEDs provide real-time fan and battery status.
The original R5 was famously plagued by overheating problems, with limited recording times in various modes, including even 4K/30p. As you’d expect, Canon worked hard to address this with the R5 II, and now only 8K/60p, 8K/30p and 4K 120p have recording time limits, which topside shooters can largely solve by using Canon’s cooling fan grip accessory (CF-R20EP). It’s not clear if underwater videographers will see this as an issue, since the R5 II’s recording time limits—without a cooling accessory—are measured in minutes (18 minutes for 8K/60p, 37 minutes for 8K/30p and 22 minutes for 4K/120p) rather than the seconds-long clips typically captured while diving.
Priced at $633, the Nauticam Cooling Fan System for the NA-R5II housing is available for order now.
