Winner, Underwater, “Featherhome” by Luis Arpa Toribio
Nature Talks has announced the results of the latest Nature Photographer of the Year competition, with the title of “Nature Photographer of the Year 2025” going to Norwegian photographer Åsmund Keilen for a beautiful shot of a bird in flight against a glowing sun.
However, it is, of course, the contest’s Underwater category that will be of greatest interest to DPG readers, and the winner, runner-up and highly commended images don’t disappoint. Spanish shooter Luis Arpa Toribio claims the top spot in the category, with a wonderfully lit shot of a crinoid shrimp camouflaged within a feather star, taken in Tulamben, Bali. The runner-up is Italian photographer Alex Varani, whose aptly named “Jellyfish Watercolour” captures a mass aggregation of jellies off Misool Island, Raja Ampat.
Russia-born, USA-based DPG Photographer of the Week Anton Sorokin is highly commended for his moody image of embracing California newts, captured in San Francisco Bay, while South Africa shooter Geo Cloete is highly commended for his dramatic shot of sandy anemones in the shallow waters of his home country. Finally, DPG Field Editor and DPG Masters 2025 Jury Chair Nicolas Remy also scores a “Highly Commended” honor for his perfectly composed photo of a gulf wobbegong surrounded by a swarm of glassfish—a classic scene from the waters of South West Rocks, New South Wales, Australia.
Head over to the Nature Photographer of the Year website to check out all the stunning winning images. And don’t forget that the deadline of this year’s DPG Masters Underwater Imaging Competition—December 1st!—is fast approaching. Make sure to submit your entries for a chance to win some epic travel and gear prizes!
