NAB Show Product Announcements
By Joseph Tepper, April 13, 2015 @ 05:32 PM (EST)

The National Association of Broadcasters Show (shortened to NAB) is underway in Las Vegas this week. As always, the show elicits a slew of product announcements, many in the prosumer and professional video category. As the show goes on, DPG will be sharing all of the major announcements and what they mean for underwater photographers and videographers.

Check back often as we update the list of products.

RED 8K Weapon Vista Vision Camera

RED Digital Cinema has unveiled an update for their Weapon camera, which was announced just a few short months ago. At NAB they have on display the 8K version, the Weapon Vista Vision. In case you’re wondering what exactly that translates to, the camera will have a 8,192x4,320 35-megapixel sensor, which is capable of capturing 8K video up to 75fps.

The camera is expected to start shipping at the end of 2015, while the company is offering an upgrade from the current Weapon camera for $20,000. (The upgrade is half price during the NAB show.)

Blackmagic Cinema Cameras

Blackmagic announced several new camera models at NAB. At the top of the line (and price point), the new URSA cameras offer 4.6K resolution, with an impressive 15 stops of dynamic range. At 4,608x2,592-pixel resolution, the camera is capable of capturing footage at up to 120fps. The Blackmagic URSA 4.6K camera will be available by the summer for $7,495. Owners of the standard URSA camera can upgrade to the 4.6K version for as little as $2,000.

Scaled down, the newly announced URSA Mini is a portable version of the URSA cinema camera. It is constructed from magnesium alloy to keep it lightweight and portable. It comes in the same 4K and 4.6K options as the full-sized URSA camera, with frame rates up to 60fps and a full HD touchscreen.

But it gets even more compact: The company has also announced the Blackmagic Micro cinema camera. The goal of the new version is to enable remote operation: The airplane remote allows users to capture and control the action from anywhere.

Sony

At NAB, Sony has on display what the company claims to be the world’s smallest 30x zoom cameras, the HX90V and WX500.

Both cameras feature a 35mm equivalent focal length zoom lens of 24–720mm with 5-axis image stabilization. Inside, both feature the same 18.2 BSI CMOS sensor. Other features include a pop-up flash and 1080p video recording. The higher end HX90V also includes advanced features like the pop-up OLED viewfinder.

For the most part, these types of compacts have only had scant housing compatibility. We’d expect a housing from Ikelite and perhaps a few other manufacturers. The WX500 will cost $330 and the HX90V will cost $430 when available in June.
