Mass Stranding of Pilot Whales in Florida’s Everglades

Some 40 pilot whales became stranded in shallow water earlier this week near Highland Beach in the Everglades National Park, leaving eleven whales dead.

Boats from the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. National Park Service have been herding the pod of whales toward their homeland in deeper waters. Experts are tentatively optimistic that the pod will successfully navigate to safer territory.

Veterinarians and biologists will examine the bodies of four of the dead whales in order to determine the cause of death. Some fear that the whales may be infected with the Morbilly virus, which is very contagious and killed a record amount of dolphins this past year.
