Lonesome George, The Last Pinta Island Giant Tortoise, Dies
By Matt J. Weiss, June 25, 2012 @ 11:28 AM (EST)
Lonesome George, perhaps Galapagos Islands' most famous resident and the last remaining Pinta Island giant tortoise, has passed away. Lonesome George became the islands' mascot of sorts after it was discovered in 1971 that he was the last remaining individual of his species.
George was found dead Sunday morning by his long time caretaker, Fausto Llerna. A an examination will take place as George, believed to be 100, was still young for giant tortoise standards, which can live up to 200 years.
Although Lonesome George was the last remaining purebred Pinta Island giant tortoise, but there is at least one species that has been found to be a hybrid.
R.I.P. Lonesome George!
