Almost too unbelievable to believe, vendors in China are selling small plastic 'keychains' that contain live fish, turtles, and salamanders. They are kept alive for a short period of time with a 'nutrient rich' solution and eventually die from lack of oxygen. Since these animals are not protected under the Wild Animal Protection Law, this is considered legal practice and a depressing one at that. These adorable little gifts, (sarcasm), are typically sold at subway and train stations and are also considered a delicacy in Chinese cooking. There are serious potential health risks associates with turtles as they have been known to carry salmonella, which can cause serious illness.
