Leica has announced a new fast super wide-angle zoom lens for the L-mount: the Super-Vario-Elmarit-SL 14–24 f/2.8 ASPH. It’s the first lens in Leica’s SL range to feature a 14mm focal length—that’s a diagonal angle of view of 114° on full frame.
Featuring a full-metal aluminum housing, the lens boasts 18 lens elements in 13 groups, including three aspherical elements, and can focus down to 11in (28cm) across its entire zoom range. (Interestingly, these are exactly the same specifications as the Sigma 14–24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art.)
Measuring 5.16in (131mm) in length and 3.35in (85mm) in diameter, it’s a relatively compact lens, but tipping the scales at 30.2oz (855g), it’s not particularly lightweight. By comparison, the Nikon Z 14–24mm f/2.8 S weighs 22.9oz (650g), while the recently released Canon RF 10–20mm f/4 L IS STM weighs just 20.1oz (570g).
Shipping now, the Super-Vario-Elmarit-SL 14–24 f/2.8 ASPH is available for $2,495.
