Hoax alert! Tell your friends, tell your family, tell your weird uncle who forwards everything: The viral post claiming to be a new Instagram rule making all user content public is just a hoax.
The subject of the hoax is a spam image that—among other interesting baseless legalese—claims Instagram will share “everything you’ve ever posted…even messages that have been deleted or the photos not allowed.” Although seemingly ridiculous, the hoax post has been shared by a number of celebrities and feeds on the increasing fear surrounding social media data privacy.
Fear not, says Instagram brand communications manager Stephanie Otway: “There’s no truth to this post,” she told WWD.
The goal of the hoax is unclear. But users keen on keeping their data and posts private are encouraged to share the post, which will only garner it more attention. So feel free to share the post—but perhaps consider perusing Instagram’s official Data Policy.
