Palu, Indonesia: The site of a devastating earthquake and tsunami
We are getting updates from colleagues and friends after a deadly earthquake and tsunami struck the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. The bad news is that the damage is severe: The 7.5-magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami that killed nearly 400 people in Palu, Indonesia. The death toll is expected to climb.
Indonesia is a hub in the dive travel community and so there was much concern for those in the industry and traveling underwater photographers. Fortunately, it appears that much of the damage is localized to the coastal city in Central Sulawesi. We have heard encouraging news from dive operators in nearby North Sulawesi.
“Thank you very much for the concerned messages,” Siladen Resort and Spa posted on Facebook this morning. “The earthquakes that occurred in Central Sulawesi were not felt in this area (North Sulawesi), we have sunny weather and calm seas this morning.”
Our thoughts are with the people impacted by this natural disaster and any travelers caught in the middle of the situation.
