The Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) has agreed to adopt more sustainable tuna fishing practices—a decision that is long overdue as it comes a decade after most other world fishery management organizations have adopted these same measures.

The proposal was put forward by the islands of Maldives, Mauritius, and Seychelles, who have agreed to adopt the precautionary approach for Indian Ocean tuna fishing. The IOTC has also agreed to adopt more basic ocean-friendly practices, such as the protection of seabirds and sea turtles.

Although this is certainly a step in the right direction, more specific management policies such as catch limits or agreements protecting sharks and dolphins have not yet been implemented.
