Over the past years, locals and scientists have noticed an increase in orca sightings in the Hudson Bay in Northeast Canada. Scientists now believe that this is most likely due to the decrease in summer sea ice in the Hudson Strait.
Orcas generally avoid ice because their tall dorsal fins can easily become trapped. A decline in summer sea ice has opened up the Hudson Strait allowing orcas access to the bay. This causes locals and scientists some concern because the orcas are now preying on endangered marine mammals that live there as well as competing with Inuit hunters who depend on marine animals for income.
