If you need any more motivation to stick to your workout regimen, a new study has some alarming results. Cardiac events such as heart attacks are rising rapidly for aging and overweight divers.
From 1989 to 2015, the proportion of diving fatalities from cardiac events for 60-plus-year-old divers skyrocketed from 5 to 20 percent. This now makes cardiac events the second highest cause of death for divers—just behind drowning.
“Divers who learned to dive years ago and who are now old and overweight, with high blood pressure and high cholesterol, are at increased risk of dying,” said study author Dr. Peter Buzzacott, of the University of Western Australia.
There are several contributing factors that may contribute to such cardiac events: smoking, obesity, and high blood pressure. Read more about this eye-opening study in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology.
