All that’s standing in the way between making Illinois the latest US state to ban shark fins is a signature by Governor Pat Quinn.

Today, the Illinois Legislature passed a resolution that would make the possession or distribution of fins in the state illegal. Illinois is set to become the first major state or country not bordering the ocean to ban fins.

Experts say that while Illinois is not on the coast, it is still a major hub for fin distribution in the Midwest. 

“I think (the vote) was decisive, I would consider that a mandate,” said Rep. Sara Feigenholtz (D–Chicago), the bill’s chief sponsor. “I’m delighted.”
