New York City has seen a few underwater photography exhibits over the past several weeks. However, when Howard Schatz is involved, you can expect something very special and unique.
The exhibit associated with his new book "H2O" launched to a resounding sound
of jaws dropping and eyes popping. The high quality large sized prints are rich in color and can be appreciated in a new way. There's just something about standing in front of a 4 foot Howard Schatz image that is an experience in itself.
We reviewed H2O a few weeks
ago, as Howard was kind enough to send us an advance copy. The book is beautiful
and Howard's imagery in general is mind bogglingly amazing.
A couple of Howard's models were at the opening. Emma Stein and Francesca Tedeschi, otherwise known as "The Angel" and "Jesus at the underwater last supper", were telling us what it's like working with Howard. I guess it's always a pleasure to work with a virtuoso.
Howard spends a lot of time casting models for his shoots. These girls made the cut in a fairly hefty screening process ... and ultimately the end results are beautiful, surreal images like only Howard can produce.
H2O (Bullfinch Press) is available now from any major book retailer. You may not have made it to the gallery opening to get your copy signed, but it surely serves a spot on your coffee table or book shelf.
If you do
live in or around NYC, you definitely want to see this exhibit. The Lumas Gallery, at 77 Wooster St, will have Howard's images on
exhibit through November 29, 2007.
