Shark fin soup has long been a tradition on wedding banquet menus in most Asian cultures. A recent survey by BLOOM, a marine education and lobbying group, found the 78% of Hong Kongers felt that it’s “socially acceptable to leave shark fin soup off the menu for a wedding banquet.”
The survey also found that while 70% do still consume shark fin soup at least once a year, about 87% of that consumption was when the soup was included on a fixed menu rather than the individual ordering it on their own.
A little contradictory perhaps, two-thirds of those interviewed indicated they are uncomfortable eating endangered fish, and 85% support banning shark fin imports.
Overall, the survey shows that the anti-shark fin campaigns are changing how people in Hong Kong feel about shark fin soup. The fewer hosts who include it on banquet menus, the fewer people who will eat it, even just once a year.
The complete survey can be found on BLOOM Association's web site.
