Honduras and Costa Rica Propose Hammerhead Protection

Both Honduras and Costa Rica’s governments have announced plans for protection of the endangered hammerhead shark.
The proposal will take place under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and will be voted on in March 2013.
Honduran minister of natural resources and environment , Rigoberto Cuellar, said, “the decision to propose a CITES Appendix II listing for these hammerhead species sends a significant conservation message and builds upon shark conservation efforts under way in Central America.”
The scalloped hammerhead shark accounts for about four percent of the international shark fin trade.
