GoPro Announces HERO9 Black with 5K Video
By Ian Bongso-Seldrup, September 17, 2020 @ 02:00 AM (EST)

GoPro has unveiled the latest version of its popular action cam—the HERO9 Black—with a slew of upgrades and improvements over its predecessor, announced a little less than a year ago. The new model boasts a new 1.4-inch front-facing display and a larger 2.27-inch rear touchscreen, a new 20MP sensor that shoots 5K/30p as well as 4K/60p and 1080/240p, and a removable wider-angle lens that can be replaced with the new Max Lens Mod, which has a 155° field of view.

Despite the extra display and enlarged touchscreen, GoPro says the HERO9 Black has 30% more battery life than its predecessor. However, the device is also a touch larger (and heavier), so cases and housings for the HERO8 won’t be compatible.

Available now, the GoPro HERO9 Black costs $450 on its own, but you can get it for $100 less when you get a one-year GoPro subscription as well. Effectively, there’s no reason not to, since the first year’s subscription is actually included in that $350 price. GoPro are, of course, banking on you continuing the $50/year subscription thereafter—hoping you’ll be unwilling to give up the unlimited cloud storage, “no questions asked” camera replacement, and gear discounts that come with it.

“HERO9 Black reflects our commitment to delivering what our customers have been asking for, including more value for their money,” said Nicholas Woodman, GoPro’s founder and CEO. “HERO9 Black is a beast of a product, and GoPro subscribers can get it for $100 off at GoPro.com while also enjoying unlimited cloud storage of their GoPro footage, up to 50% on everything at GoPro.com and no-questions-asked camera replacement. And we’re not done, with more value adds coming to GoPro subscribers later this year.”

GoPro has also eliminated plastic from HERO9 Black’s packaging and added value by packaging the camera in a high-quality travel case that fits additional mounts and accessories.

“Reducing as much plastic as possible from our business is a priority for us,” said Woodman. “We’re excited to package HERO9 Black in a high-value travel case instead of traditional wasteful packaging, and we’re committed to doing the same with the rest of our cameras by the end of 2021.”
