New Feature: Geo Tag Your Images!
By Matt J. Weiss, February 4, 2010 @ 04:38 AM (EST)

We have added a new feature to DivePhotoGuide -- "Geo tagging." What that means is that you can tag your image with the geographical location in which you shot it.  Once you have done so, a Google Map will display underneath your image pinpointing the geographical location your image was taken.  I think this a great feature for the DPG community, as one of the first questions people often ask about an underwater photograph is "where was it taken?" Now, the answer to that question is displayed below your image! Here is a tutorial on how to geo tag your image.

Click on "My Profile" on the upper right hand corner of any DPG page

In your profile page, select the "My Galleries" tab

Click on a gallery that has photos you want to geo tag. Note: Any new photos uploaded can be geo tagged. If you don't have  a gallery yet, hit the "Create New Album" button to create a gallery where you can upload images.  In my case, I am just going to edit an existing photo.

Hit the 'Edit" button under the image you want to geo tag

You will now notice a "Set Location" button with two blank fields under it. Click the "Set Location" button

In the search box, type the name of the place where you took the underwater photograph and hit "Search"

A small red marker will appear at the location you entered. You can move the marker around to exact position you please. Use the +/- buttons (highlighted in the red circle) to zoom in and out. Once you have located the place where your image was taken, hit the "Set Location" button.

Note: If you search for a place that Google doesn't recognize, try being less specific in your location.  For example, Google can not locate Tulamben but it can locate Bali. Once  Google has located Bali, it's simple to drag the marker over to Tulamben.

You will see that your location has been tagged in the image, both by the geographical name and coordinates. Hit the save button to confirm your changes. Congratulations, you have just geo tagged an underwater image!

As you can see, a Google map with the location marked shows up underneath my image.
