First Video of Humpback Calf Nursing
Researchers have captured first-of-its-kind footage of humpback whale nursing—from the calf’s point of view.
The nonprofit group Cétamada was tagging and monitoring humpbacks off Madagascar, when a CATS camera attached to a baby whale recorded the rare behavior. The efforts are part of a larger study to shed light on the communication methods and behaviors of the whales.
You can see the suckling behavior begin 50 seconds into the video. “Footage recorded on the breeding ground on the east coast of Madagascar at Ste Marie Island,” write the researchers. Check out the amazing behavior below.
