First In-Depth Look at Microbial Life in the Deep Sea

Scientists from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst recently conducted the first detailed study of microbial life living in deep sea volcanoes. The study details their research on methane-exhaling microbes that live among the cracks of these volcanoes.

Although an estimated one third of Earth’s organisms are tiny microbes living in rock and sediments, very little time has been spent in researching them.

“For the first time we're studying these subsurface microorganisms, defining their habitat requirements and determining how they differ among species,” said James Holden, microbiologist and leader of the study.

Scientists are hopeful that new findings will shed light on a variety of different topics including natural gas formation, prehistoric metabolic processes, as well as ecological cycles in the deep-sea environment.
