Female humpback whales with calves swim to shallower waters in order to avoid unwanted attention from males and to save energy for feeding their young.
A new study conducted off of Hawaii showed that females were more likely to be pursued by males in deeper waters, but as the females retreated to shallower waters, males became less present.
Scientists aren’t sure why males avoid shallower waters, but hypothesize that because more ovulating female whales can be found in deeper water, males are encouraged to seek out deep water and stay away from the shallows.
