A rare and endangered species of freshwater pearl mussels has suffered a giant blow with 80,000 of their 12 million wiped out in one episode. The species lives in the U.K. at the Ennerdale Water in Cumbria.
The reason behind the death of the mussels is undetermined, but scientists theorize that it could have been caused by lowered water levels that subsequently caused higher water temperatures and lower levels of oxygen.
U.K. scientists and conservationists are understandingly upset at the loss of the mussels especially as they are on the “most endangered species” list created by the International Union for Conservation of Nature( IUCN).
