A study conducted by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) estimates the state's manatee population at 4,840. The arial survey was conducted from January 20th through 24th in a combined effort between 20 observers from 11 organizations.
The estimate comes after one of the most costly, cold winters in recent history, which led to 699 deaths in one winter alone. "The relatively high counts this year are encouraging, given the extremely high number of manatees that died from cold stress in 2010," said Gil McRae, director of the FWC's Fish and Wildlife Research Institute.
