A diver has captured shocking video of a dive guide in the Bahamas losing his cool with some nurse sharks that try to steal chum from a bait box. The dive guide, from Stuart Cove’s Dive Bahamas, is seen punching and shoving one shark and dragging other sharks away by the tail.
Nicholas Jones, who captured the footage, told U.K. media outlet Media Drum World, “The guide did not lock the bait box properly—twice—and proceeded to punish the sharks for their innate ability and natural reaction to accessible food on a shark-feeding dive.”
“So basically, the shark feeder lost his temper with the nurse sharks and punched them because of his own mistake. If the nurse sharks had eaten all of the chum, the reef sharks would have left the ‘arena’ and the show would have been over.
“Upon surfacing, when the guide was questioned about his treatment of the sharks, he responded, ‘Yeah, sometimes you just have to demand some [f******] respect.’”
Update:
Stuart Cove’s Dive Bahamas has provided the following official statement:
Stuart Cove’s Dive Bahamas has always and will continue to stand for shark conservation, protection of sharks and the respectful treatment of sharks. We have been closely involved in shutting down the terrible practice of finning and turning the Bahamas into a shark sanctuary. The entire management team has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to staff or guests offending marine life. We were shocked to see the video of one our shark feeders punching nurse sharks. The guide has been released the very same day from all duties and was dismissed with immediate effect. He himself was shocked how much he lost control and was very apologetic about the incident. We have discussed the issue with all our shark feeders and re-iterated the strict rules applying to shark feeds. We will continue with the programme, as it is an excellent tool to demonstrate the beauty, elegance and importance of these animals.
