Digital Scuba Mask in the Works
By Ian Seldrup, November 12, 2014 @ 09:55 AM (EST)

If you’ve been ogling Google Glass and wondering why the tech behemoth hasn’t yet announced an underwater version, wonder no longer. The only thing is, the Scubus S hasn’t emerged from the fertile imagination of some Google boffin; the “world’s first augmented reality scuba diving mask” is the brainchild of one Noah Smith, and—sorry!—it’s currently only in development. The crowdfunding campaign that will pay for it launched a couple of days ago, on November 10.

If the Scubus S becomes a reality, it promises a heads-up display showing time, depth, and water temperature, as well as sporting a chat function to allow communication with other divers wearing the device in the vicinity. The chat system—which works underwater because it uses acoustic waves—allows you to choose from a list of preset messages using a wrist-mounted controller.

Naturally, the mask can also take high-resolution still photos and features a built-in HD video camera. Throw in 16 GB on-board memory, an LED flashlight and a depth rating of 40 meters, and you’ve got a pretty sweet gizmo.

All the developers need now is a mere $200,000—a small price to pay for a visionary idea.
