Dema 2008: Sea & Sea
By Matt J. Weiss, October 25, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)
Despite not actually being in the photo pavilion, Sea & Sea still has one of the largest and most impressive photography related displays. As expected, they had a nice array of dSLR housings as well as their popular line of underwater point and shoot cameras on display. It was my first time meeting John Davy. He and the Sea & Sea team showed me some of the new housings.
The big question on all of our minds is "when is Sea&Sea releasing a housing for Nikon D700?" Well, there wasn't one on display, but their banner did include a picture of the housing and we were officially told that it is now "in production", which I think is the code word for soon-ish.
On the dSLR side they were displaying their new housing for the Nikon D60, which will probably be a popular entry level dSLR camera and housing combo, as was the D40 last year. The small size of the camera and housing makes it especially appealing considering the decreasing baggage limits of airlines.
For Canon shooters the 450D (Rebel XSi) housing was on display featuring the same quality we have become accustomed to with Sea & Sea's new MDX line. Like the Rebel predescessors, this will without also become one of the more popular models to take underwater in the upcoming months.
They also featured their line of point and shoot cameras and housings. These are very popular among novice and mid-level photographers. The DX-1200HD, which hit the market this past summer, looked particularly appealing because of its small size, light weight, and ease of use - but also it’s a fairly powerful camera. It seems like it would be a perfect camera for a new photographer who wants to immerse themselves into the sometimes overwhelming world of underwater photography. Its got a beautiful 3 inch LCD monitor and the option to add additional accessories like close up lenses and strobes. The DX-2G is Sea & Sea's newest addition to their point and shoot line, which is the sucessor to the popular DX-1G.
I got to see the new YS-110 alpha for the first time, announced a few weeks before DEMA. The alpha is an improvement on the very popular YS-110, that both Jason and I use. The alpha gives the strobes better DS TTL accuracy and a few upgrades that had me contemplating the upgrade – despite just buying my 110’s.
