DEMA 2008: Mares

Despite having a huge display at DEMA, Mares was wrapping their show around one new ground-breaking product that employs top of the line technology – the Carbon 42. The Carbon 42 is conglomerate of all the best technology used in existing Mares regulators combined with a few new features- most notably the use of carbon fiber in the second stage. This second stage is made with the new sheet molding compound technology that makes the use of carbon fiber composite possible. The carbon material makes the regulator ridiculously light, weighing in at 60 percent less than metal versions and 30 percent less than technopolymer versions. Combine this with the small, light MR 42 first stage and the super flex hose mares has adopted and you have an amazingly light reg! Mares didn’t sacrifice quality for lightness though, as the carbon material provides an even stronger and superior material for regulators.
The thermal conductivity and corrosive resistance is higher in the carbon second stage than in any other regulator made out of metal or technopolymer making it perfect for rough situations and cold conditions.
Additionally, the second stage comes complete with a mesh grid system that helps prevent against really, really annoying free flows with adjusting required.
The reg without a doubt sets a new precedent for regulator technology, and it comes with a corresponding price tag at $ 1000 bucks plus the $450 octopus. The model at the show was prototype and the real version should come out in Q1 of next year. I imagine I will see a few out in the seas.
However, you could not get to the regulator without first passing the entrance to the Mares booth which featured a giant picture of our very own Wendy Heller that was photographed by Jason. It was situated right in the front of the show, facing the main walkway. Give it up to the 2008 Mares girl and Mares girl photographer!
