DEMA 2008: Epoque
By Matt J. Weiss, October 30, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)
Epoque is a cool company because it caters to the very beginners and now it’s starting to offer more advanced products for the intermediate and cost effective advanced shooters. Epoque took a big step towards the advanced shooter direction by releasing the Epoque ERX-C1010 SLR housing specifically for the Canon Rebel XS. The rebel is the most popular line of DSLRs and there seem to be a number housings coming out specifically for it. The Epoque model takes advantage of its many features and offers all necessary items in a housing, but for much cheaper than most of the competition. It has your double O-rings, flat ports for the popular 50 mm and 100 mm macro lenses and dome ports for the fisheyes and wide angles. A very noteworthy feature was that it had a clear opening with a diffuser where the cameras built in flash is, very much like what you see in many compact cameras. I don't think anyone would argue that the camera's built in flash is optimal source of light for underwater photography, but for many macro cases it can be better than nothing. I am not sure if any other SLR housing have this feature and it will be interesting to see if many users find it helpful. The best part about the housing – its $1,195 price tag.
Epoque also displayed its EL-240 HID Underwater Video Lights. The lights are designed to accessorize the EHD-1000 HD underwater video housings, which house the Sanyo Xacti VPC-1010 and VPC 100 full HD cameras. After a full charge, the lights provide 100 minutes of 24 watt HID lighting.
Frank of Epoque USA also showed me the EHD-Ai Underwater Digital Camera and Housing. It’s a 8.0 mega pixel camera with a 3x optical zoom a nice 2.5 inch LCD screen. It easily drops into the housing, with no screwing and very little hassle required. Also, it’s very cheap at just $349 for the camera/housing bundle.
