DEMA 2009: Video Housings

Video housings ranged from consumer camcorders to cinematic quality at DEMA 2009. All the usual players were there and Aquatica even had their own video booth. this year Here is DPG's coverage of what's new in the world of underwater videography at DEMA 2009.

Gates

Gates was back at DEMA with their impressive line of video housings. The Gates DEEP RED 4K housing was back for an encore, but Gates also had another big boy at the show - the brand new HPX-3700 housing for the broadcast quality Varicam from Panasonic. The housing fits the HPX-3700 and also the Panasonic HPX-2700 and HPX-3000.
Gates designed special optics using the Zeiss DigiPrime 3.9mm lens that allows for corner-to-corner sharpness on this super wide lens. It was originally made specifically for a client shooting humpbacks in Tonga and after talking to Gates’ John Ellerbrock, the footage sounds pretty mind blowing.

Also shown with the housing was massive 8 inch video monitor for the Panasonic BT-LH80WU. This is a big screen, but must be nice for framing scenes underwater. In fact, this entire cinematic quality housing is pretty massive, coming in at 75 lbs (in air, with the camera in it). It’s pretty hard not to have gear envy when in close range to this housing. The housing also borrowed a few features from the DEEP RED housing, including a removable back bell set up that can be broken down for travel, and trim weights for neutral buoyancy.

On the pro-sumer end of the spectrum was a the Gates HF-S11 for the Canon HF-S11, HF-S10 and HF-S100. While Gates is well recognized for their higher end models, this housing for a consumer camcorder looked like it had all the same qualities as its more expensive brethren. What was really unique about the housing was the clever placement of the camera’s remote inside the housing, which allows for access to all of the important features of the camcorder.

Light & Motion

The Light & Motion booth always tempts me to take the plunge into video. This year, they were featuring some new appealing upgrades to products that Paul Barnett was very excited to tell us about.

The Stingray+ housings have been upgraded to include electronic controls. It features a Sony LCD screen and electronic one touch white balance. The housing is somehat universal in that it fits 25 different cameras.

Also getting a upgrade were the Sunray LED video lights. The underwater video lights market has been shifting to LED from the HID's recently, and we are hearing great things about the Sunrays. The new Sunray lights are now smaller but give off 12000 lumens of light.
Paul was also pumped about the prototype for the Compact Imaging Light, which is a very small 600-lumen light. It is a fully sealed, through body charged light, which means its impossible to flood. The small light can run for 70-minutes on one charge and can change from white light to red light.

Equinox

Equinox was once again displaying their very distinct looking line of video housings. One of their new products was the HD6 for the Sony CX-500/520. This is a reasonably priced housing for a quality consumer camcorder that can go down to 250 feet.
It was hard to pay attention to anything else at the Equinox booth when the giant bright red HD-Pro housing for the RED ONE camera was sitting right there. The housing is set to be released soon, and will most likely be one of the most affordable ways to take the RED ONE underwater. So if you're planning to sell your car to buy a RED camera, Equinox can help you afford the housing.
Aquatica

Across the aisle from their photography booth, Joe Bendahan manned Aquatica’s video booth, which featured a prototype of a new housing for the Canon HF S10/100. The housing looks similar to Aquatica’s HD Wave housing for the Sony HDR-XR500V, and is made out of marine grade solid aluminum.
The housing features a bayonent mounted lens system with a lock, a standard 68 degree field of view wide-angle lens with full zoom through, an auxiliary port to connect external accessories, a dual grip system that allows mounting of Aquatica’s TLC arms, a 20 degree angled 2.7” LCD viewfinder, a hydrophone and an internal flip filter arm with a UR Pro blue water color correction filter.
The most significant feature is the new hybrid design, which means the mechanical controls are now combined with electronic controls. The electronic controls allow aaccess to lmost of the features of the camera, including manual white balance, through buttons on the left handle of the housing.
The housing will be available at the end of the year for $2995.
