DEMA 2009: The Show Floor & The DPG Booth

DEMA 2009: The Show Floor

I spent most of the show running around doing coverage, but the few moments I did spend at the booth were enjoyable. I got to see many old friends walking the aisles and made plenty of new ones. It’s always great to put faces to names at the dive shows.

The most exciting product to grace the DPG booth was the answer to the DPG Digital Nikonos Challenge, where we challenged the industry to develop some type of adapter or digital back that would work with Nikonos lenses. Enterprising engineer David Lewinnek and Shana Lyons through down the gauntlet and started a new company called PiratePro. We were really excited to see the working prototype.

Essentially the solution is a housing for the Olympus EP-1, a micro four thirds camera, and an external fitting set just right to utlize various Nikonos lenses. The housing also holds  an Olympus FL14 flash, which is set behind two fiber optics connection ports for strobe connections.
Due to the size of the micro four thirds sensor and the 2x crop factor, the Nikonos 15mm lens effectively becomes a 30mm lens, and the 12mm Nikonos lens becomes a 24mm lens. While this doesn't allow for the ultra wide capabilities that the Nikonos 12mm and 15mm lenses were known for, it still provides the ability to shoot with the high quality Nikonos glass
Surely this will pique the interest of any underwater photographers who used to shoot with the Nikonos and have not yet turned their Nikonos lenses into paperwights or an arts and crafts project. it is important to note that this innovative design would not have been possible prior to the introduction of the micro four thirds format, which utilizes interchangable lenses and provides direct sensor access.

We are looking forward to taking the next prototype for a test shoot underwater. The current design was prototyped to prove functional efficacy, and  PiratePro will be adding ergonomic design improvements in the next round. Stay tuned!

I spent most of my time looking for the newest underwater photography products that may be interesting to DPG readers, but also wandered around the showfloor to soak it all in.

New World Publications was not in the photo pavilion ... but does anyone love their ID books more than underwater photographers?? I met Ned Deloach for the first time, and he is a really nice, charismatic guy! Check out the video...

Our newest sponsor, Cressi, had a large booth in the front the show floor, and they were showing off their latest dive equipment. They were featuring two new products this year: The Big Eyes Evolution Crystal Silicon Mask and the Frog Plus fin. Marco Cressi himself took some time to walk us through the new products.

The Big Eyes Evolution Crystal Silicon Mask -- Made from transparent crystal silicon, the transparency of the mask stays that way, rather than fading to yellow like many other masks. Also the mask alleviates the problem of fogging through the chemical components of the materials used. We plan on trying this one out ASAP. No fogging? We're sold.

The Frog Plus fins are very resistant in the water because they use a dual density blade. This makes finning much easier and less straining on your feet.Something tells me that you'll start seeing Wendy sporting some Cressi gear in most of Jason's 2010 images...

Dive Resorts & Live Aboards

There were hundreds of resorts and live aboards at DEMA. I decided to check in with a few of our favorites that the DPG crew has dived with recently. So Rick and I stopped by and shot some video of the travel side of the show to give these guys an opportunity to lfill you in on what's going on at their destinations.
