Deep Sea Corals Under Scrutiny
Australian and American scientists set off for the Southern Ocean from Hobart tomorrow.
The submersible will dive to depths of 2.5 kilometres and spend up to seven hours filming big sea corals and other creatures of the deep, at three different locations in the southern ocean.
The research is expected to provide information on changes in ocean temperatures and environment over decades and even centuries.
Deep sea corals have rings similar to trees that indicate age and change in ocean chemistry.
