Daily Updates From the Malaysia International Dive Expo
By Jason Heller, July 12, 2007 @ 02:00 AM (EST)
The 2007 Malaysia Dive Expo kicked off today in Kuala Lumpur, one of the larger cities and hubs in Southeast Asia.

Our very own Wendy Heller is at the show, and will provide daily coverage of the event from KL, as well as the upcoming Tioman Mega Dive - stay tuned for that starting next week.

Wendy (DPG), Gunild & Peter Symes (X-Ray Mag) receive a warm welcome at the KL airport.

The Fort built by the Portuguese at Melaka. One of the many beautiful examples of the ancient architecture, ruins and temples you can find in Malaysia.

We spent a day in Melaka (also spelled Malacca ). The area's history stems back to the 1300's, and has a colorful past including Portuguese rule, which was taken over by the Dutch, and then the British, and eventually returned to Malaysia.

An incense pot inside the temple. The art and culture in Malaysia are simply beautiful.

The exhibition hall included a lovely underwater imagery gallery.

Just strolling through the gallery made me even more eager to go diving in Tioman next week!

The show floor aisles are alive and bustling with people seeking information on the dive operators, gear manufacturers and retailers of the region.

The Menara revolving restaurant provides some stunning sights of the city of KL, including a bee line view of the Petrona Towers, currently the tallest buildings on earth.

One of the delicious Chinese meals prepared for us. Can you tell that I appreciate good food?

Thanks to Nizam and Tourism Malaysia for taking great care of us, providing delicious food and looking after us each step of the way.

So far MIDE has kicked off as a successful event. The show floor has some action, the food and company are great, what more can one ask for?

We really enjoy coming to shows in Southeast Asia. This was DPG's first year at the Malaysia International Dive Expo. I was taken care of in style and got a great look at the surrounding area, something that otherwise I would not have had a chance to do. I'm really glad that I had the opportunity to expand the itinerary of the trip to do a little exploring. We look forward to coming back next year and sincerely thank the organizers and Tourism Malaysia for putting on such a great event and inviting us.

Malaysia has a large number of divable islands, including the iconic destinations of Sipadan and Borneo. In the next few days I will be heading to Tioman Island, where DPG will cover the Tioman Mega Dive event. I'll be one of the judges in the underwater photo competition...stay tuned!
