Our good friend Michele Westmorland passed along a story she contributed to Nat Geo newswatch and Huff Po on the risk new development in Cozumel poses to the local environment, specifically the micro atolls adjacent to the island.
In 2009, Michele was part of a team of photographers of the International League of Conservation Photographers to visit the hot dive spot and chronicle the threat of urbanization in the area. What they discovered caused her grave concern-
“What we encountered was both inspiring and disturbing,” writes Michele in the article about the state of the unique habitat housed by the island. “Such limited and specialized systems usually occur within very narrow survival parameters. Even minute changes can bring about irreversible damage.”
For more information on how to protect Cozumel’s remaining habitat please visit the ILCP website, or sign the online petition to help prevent the destruction of its micro atolls.
