CompactFlash 5.0 Specifications Offer Petabytes Of Theoretical Storage
By Matt J. Weiss, February 24, 2010 @ 02:56 PM (EST)
The CompactFlash Association (yes, this exists) has announced the CF5.0 specifications which will offer greater storage capacities and transfer speeds. The new CF media would enable 48-bit support, as compared to the current 28-bit, increase the data transfer unit size from 128KB/s to 32 MB/s and offer a theoretical maximum storage of 144 petabytes, yes petabytes, as opposed to the measly 137 GB maximum now. Thats, 144,000,000 GBs, over a 1,000,000 times more storage than the old version. Pygmy seahorses everywhere are rolling their eyes!
This is all just theoretical specifications because we are far away from a card or camera that can handle these specs. Clearly, the CompactFlash Association is aiming these specs towards video users, but could be also geared towards the new HD shooting SLRS.
