Chinese Submersible Plans 23,000 Foot Dive

This morning, the Chinese submersible, the Jiaolong, prepared to make its first journey 23,000 feet into the Mariana Trench. If successful, the Jiaolong will set the record for the deepest dive of any state-owned craft.
Two other submersibles have successfully completed deeper dives, one manned by film director and amateur scientist James Cameron this March and the other in 1960 by a U.S. Navy captain and a Swiss engineer.
The Jiaolong will be manned by three people and is China’s deepest diving submersible. The Chinese team plans on launching the dive in the next couple of days when the weather is calm enough for a safe journey.
