Alex Hofford and Paul Hilton of WildLifeRisk went undercover to investigate a slaughterhouse in China that was rumored to be processing whale sharks and other protected shark species. They found that the factory could be processing up to 600 whale and basking sharks a year, which, if true, would be devastating to the population of whale sharks that numbers in only the thousands.
Whale sharks are protected by both Chinese and international law, but a single animal is worth about $30,000. Its fin and meat are sold for food, its skin is sold to manufacturers, and its oil is used to make fish oil supplements.
Hoffert and Hilton are now reportedly working with the director of the documentary film The Cove to bring attention to shark fisheries.
