Although today is the official "Earth Day," there are plenty of opportunities for you to become involved in helping the Earth and the environment year-round.
Maybe the rain kept you indoors, maybe today you were just a little too busy, maybe you just forgot it was Earth Day, but don't worry, we've come up with five ways for you to help the Earth any day of the year:
1. Volunteer with the Nature Conservancy: Find volunteer opportunities in your state. Run for Nature in New York, join an outdoor work party in Oregon, or help with trail cleanup in North Carolina--no matter where you live, there are opportunities for you to help!
2. Protect a sea turtle: Donate to the Ecology Project and adopt a leatherback hatchling, nest, mama leatherback, or mama and her entire nest.
3. Participate in Green-up Day: Certain states, like Vermont, dedicate a day to greening-up their community. This means working cooperatively to pick up trash from sidewalks, roads, parks, and other public areas for the benefit of all. If your state doesn't participate in this, try hosting one in your town or neighborhood! It's as simple as buying some trash bags and getting a group of people together.
4. Shortcuts to making a difference: Visit VolunteerGuide to find out ways to help the environment in just 15 minutes, a few hours, or while on vacation.
5. Encourage your kids to help too: Being environmentally friendly can involve the entire family. The PBS kids' show Zoom showcases kids who volunteer in their community to promote a cleaner, healthier environment. Find out on their website how your kids can help too.
