Captive Breeding of Whales and Dolphins Banned in France

Lawmakers in France recently implemented a new ban on captive breeding of whales and dolphins, which will inevitably put an end to aquarium shows around the country. For those cetaceans left in captivity, aquariums are also required to increase the size of their pools within three years.
The Environment Minister, Segolene Royal, chose to tighten the rules after learning that “some animals were drugged” in captivity. Animal rights activists are calling it a “historic French advance.”
The new law also places a ban on contact between the public and animals in captivity.
